Iron Man Opening Scene
From the opening scene of Iron man I can see that the genre of this film is Action. Also I believe that the target audience of this film is predominantly men. In the opening scene we see that most of the characters except from one is male, this would suggest that the target audience is mostly male. If most of the characters are men it would allow the male audience to relate the characters. I believe that this film is an action as the establishing shot is an extreme long shot of an exotic location. Exotic locations are often the setting in many action films, the reason for this is that it gives the audience a sense of escapism. Escapism is one of the main reasons for people watching action films as they will want to escape from their every day lives.
Another thing that would show that this film is an action is that the vehicles being driven are army tanks which is a convention of an action film. The clothing the characters are wearing would suggest that they are fighting in some sort of war. War connotes violence, explosions and destruction, all of which would relate to this film being part of the action genre.
The non diagetic sound at the beginning of the scene is a rock song which is very loud, fast paced and would connote danger, which relates to this film. At the end of the scene there is a huge explosion, this is one of the conventions of an action film. Things like explosions and stunts would keep the audience entertained and intrigued, this is because the audience imagine themselves in the characters situation, so when there is a hint of danger they will feel part of it.In the opening scene there is also a hint of a love interest. The man in the suit is seen to being very flirtatious with the woman by complimenting her on her 'excellent bone structure'. In most action films there is a love interest, this would attract females to watch the films as stereo typically woman enjoy watching films with romance.
This scene almost subverts the stereo type of there being fast paced editing as most of the shots are very long, this means that there is not going to be a very fast tempo.
Also I found that the man in the suit is the main character, this man has alot of camera time and there is also many close ups of him. If one character has more camera time and has more things to say then the audience are able to get to know what they are like.
